Simple Ways for Students to Save Money

University can be exceptionally expensive. The average student can graduate with over $37000 of debt. While you may find it difficult to graduate with no debt at all, there are several ways you can save money to avoid as much as possible. Here are a few of the best.

Don’t Spend More Than You Need To

Each year that you spend studying will cost you more. So, don’t commit to a long degree before doing your research. It might be that doing a shorter degree could lead to a similar career. For example, it may surprise you to learn that many physicians recommend becoming a nurse practitioner instead. If healthcare is something you are considering, look into the difference between nurse practitioner and doctor, and maybe speak to people with experience about the nurse vs doctor issue. The same principle applies to many other careers.

Bursaries, Grants and Scholarships

Be sure to check your eligibility. There are many scholarships available, so make sure you apply for any you think you may be able to get. Before you turn to expensive student loans, also check to see if you could be entitled to a grant or bursary, which you don’t need to pay back. It is worth noting that these kinds of financial help are also available to those studying an online degree.

Save on Utilities

Don’t just accept the first deal that comes along. Shop around. Consider using a comparison website for help. You may also find your providers offer you better deals if they know you are thinking about switching. Over a year there is a lot of money to be saved by making some changes.

Save On Food

Food is one of our biggest expenses, and so one of the easiest ways to save. Don’t worry however, you don’t need to eat cheap boring meals to save food. Have a look online and find some recipes, then make meal plans for your week and shopping lists. Buy cheaper ingredients, fill your meals with fresh vegetables, and use cheaper cuts of meat. You’ll save money, and have a great, healthy diet.

Walk

Walking, instead of using public transport, will help keep you fit (without an expensive gym bill) and also save you a lot on money. It might not seem much, but it all adds up.

Nights In

Having your friends round and cooking a meal together can often be a lot more fun than an expensive night out. Food and drinks from supermarkets are a lot cheaper than buying the same things in bars and restaurants.

Buy Second Hand

Where you can, look to buy textbooks second hand. Check online sites like eBay, as many recent graduates look to sell their old course materials. Second hand clothes are also a great way to save money. Look to charity shops for some great bargains.

A combination of the above, should be able to save you quite a lot of money. Try to plan, and be organized where you can. This doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the university experience, just be careful.
